Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors

(TAPS)

 

What is TAPS?

The TAPS program aims to create a caring and diverse community for older adults who are no longer able to build community independently. Using recreation and leisure activities, TAPS supports older adults with a wide range of mobility, cognitive and emotional challenges, and abilities to come together to socialize, learn, support, and share with each other.

 
 
 
 
 

TAPS helps older adults, especially those with barriers to community resources, by offering:

  • Group excercises that include chair yoga, tai chi, and more

  • Group activities such as music, dancing games, cards, art and more

  • Field trips

  • Wellness calls

  • Home visits

  • Healthy meals and snacks during programming time

 

TAPS is intented for older adults who meet at least two of the following four criteria:

  1. Low to modest income

  2. Low to moderate frailty

  3. Socially isolated or lonely

  4. Underserved/equity deserving group

    • Cultural and/or linguistic barrier

    • Deaf and hard of hearing

    • Experiencing elder abuse

    • Experiencing mobility barriers

    • 2SLGBTQIA+

    • Newcomer/temporary resident

    • People with disabilities

    • Permanent resident (Immigrant and Refugees)

    • Risk of homelessness

    • Risk/Experiencing mental health issues

    • Risk/Experiencing physical health issues

Exclusionary Criteria

During the initial assessment, older adults who depend on external support for mobility or personal care are not eligible to attend TAPS.

Participants who are at risk of elopment while attending TAPS are also not eligible to attend the program.

Older adults who are not socially isolated and can maintain connections to community do not qualify for this program.

Participants that have unstable, long-lasting mental illnesses may not be eligible to attend.

 

Where is TAPS?

Our TAPS program is located at the Northwest Trades & Employment Training Center Building (3120 BC-16, Thornhill, BC V8G 4N8)

Directly across from the Coast Mountain College Salon, you will notice a sign that says “TAPS” with the Volunteer Terrace Logo.
